'Open Citrix Workspace Launcher?' prompt every time

Kenneth Mogstad

Question

Every time a user clicks to open an application within StoreFront in Google Chrome our users get the prompt 'Open Citrix Workspace Launcher?' (see the attached image). That is not user friendly. It does not happen in Edge or Internet Explorer. Does anyone know how to turn it off?

This is from a Windows 10 client with the latest version of Workspace App (1909) and Google Chrome (78.0.3904.70 64-bit) against StoreFront 1903.

There is a much easier fix for this than uninstalling chrome.

1. Login to StoreFront and click on Cancel to the prompt Open Citrix Workspace Launcher.

2. Click on the cog icon and select account settings.

3. Select Install Receiver and then Detect Receiver.

4. Click on Cancel on the Open Citrix Workspace Launcher prompt again. Then Already installed.

5. Go back to your apps or desktops and launch one of them.

6. This will download the ica file. Click on the arrowhead next to this then select Always open files of this type. Then either open the file or launch it again.

I confirmed this worked, thanks!

That is a good solution if the device is covered by a Group Policy and saves going around to every PC. However, in a remote, BYOD, or (is our case) the PC are not connected to the domain for security reasons, difficult to apply this.

Agree there needs to be an article on this.

Use local policies or registry.

Registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\URLWhitelist]

(values are REG_SZ)
"1"="workspace://*"
"2"="receiver://*"

Thanks a lot for your replies guys. We ended up being able to solve this permanently by implementing the Google Chrome GPO setting in the screenshot below:

Citrix ought to create an article about this.

Worked great!

In Edge Chromium, the policy is "Define a list of allowed URLs" and works just the same.

I have the same issue as well.  Windows 10 endpoint, Workspace App 1907 (upgraded to 1909, same issue), Chrome 77.0.3864.120 64-bit (upgraded to 78.0.3904.70, same issue), my NetScaler and StoreFront store versions that I access vary from 7.8 to 1906 all yielding the same result.

We have several user’s that are also experiencing this issue with the latest version of Chrome, however I believe we found a workaround:

Step 1. Uninstall Google Chrome

Step 2. Download and install older version of Google Chrome Version 76.  Go to following site which has several older versions: https://www.slimjet.com/chrome/google-chrome-old-version.php (We used the 64Bit version 76.0.3809.100)

Step 3. Log into Citrix StoreFront, this time when you log in or launch an App you’ll receive the same dialog box: OPEN CITRIX WORKSPACE LAUNCHER?  But with one difference, you’ll see a check box that I believe reads Always Open This File type.  Not sure exactly the wording but MAKE SURE you check this box.  From this point forward you’ll see that you will not receive the Open Citrix Workspace Launcher? dialog box anyone.

***IMPORTANT*** Do not wait too long to log into Citrix StoreFront after installing older version of Chrome ver 76, you don’t want chrome to update to latest version just yet.

Step 4. After you have clicked the check box (in step 3) and opened apps without the dialog box appearing anymore, now you can go ahead and update chrome to latest version (Setting > About Chrome).  You’ll need to restart chrome once updated to latest version.

Hope this helps!

Does this entry work for Citrix Workspace app is installed as well?

Or is it workspace://* in that case?

As above, in Storefront I clicked my name, "Install Receiver", Detect receiver, cancel download, already installed.
Now when I launch a published app or desktop my Chrome downloads the .ica file that I can then "always open files of this type".
Thanks!

This works great.

Except if you have SSO enabled, these steps will make the nasty pop-up go away, but SSO won't work anymore.

Too bad there is no proper fix released yet. Our problems started when we upgraded StoreFront from 7.15 to 1912.

Not had any issue with our SSO which is via Azure AD and FAS server.

We have however now switch to just using the app rather than doing logging in via Chrome. Seems a lot more reliable, no prompts and no issue with users logging in and not getting any app or desktops, which was more of an issue than the open prompt.

Unfortunately the best option for BYOD users is to disable the protocol handler and have them select always open on the ICA file the first time they launch an application unless Citrix can get this integrated properly with Chrome and Edge.

Interestingly both the Edge and Chrome documentation indicate that the default (unset) behavior should be that the remember/always allow check box should be available.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-policies#externalprotocoldialogshowalwaysopencheckbox

https://cloud.google.com/docs/chrome-enterprise/policies/?policy=ExternalProtocolDialogShowAlwaysOpenCheckbox

Can anyone confirm if this fix still works in Windows 10 2004 (19041)? As of Chrome 85.0.4183.83 and Windows 10 2004 (19041) it seemed to stop working. Previously working base image and GPO was still there, but after the update to 2004 kept prompting for permission to open in receiver.  I tried deleting and recreating the GPO, and then testing with newly created user, but no go.

update 9/13/2020:

Ok looks like it's "broken" for 4.9 LTSR 9 in 2004. However works ok with Citrix Workspace with workspace://* as someone mentioned earlier.
