Dell R740 + NIC BCM57800 1/10GB Ethernet + Xen 7.4 Link Problem

Question

Hello there!

After a fresh install of Xenserver 7.4 on a Dell R740 equipped with Broadcom Limited NetXtreme II BCM578000 1/10GB Ethernet, the links betwen the 10GB ports network card and the Switch 1/10GB are down. XenServer even recognizes the interfaces, but no link even using cat6 cables. If I enter in server bios setup, link becomes active.

I´ve tryied to upgrade firmwares, but look like the server comes with the lastest version installed.

 

Anyone can halp?

According to the HCL the BCM57800 hasn't been supported since XenServer 6.5 (http://hcl.xensource.com/networkadapters/119/Broadcom_Corporation_NetXtreme_II_BCM57800_1_10_Gigabit_Ethernet). Is this NIC a standard configuation option with the R740? If so I can try raising with Dell/Broadcom for their support.

 

However in the meantime it looks like the BCM57800 uses the bnx2x driver. You can find the latest driver disk for this here:

I got the same problem last year , turned out 57800 drivers are not there in Xen version >7.X or so . I tried to installing drivers and didn't work out well for bnx so I replaced it with a supported one ( Broadcom 57416 Dual Port 10GbE BASE-T & 5720 Dual Port)  looking at HCL for Xenserver  .

I had to swap both onboard and additional network cards , beyond xen6.5 BCM57800 don't work uptil xen 7.5 when I tested it . You can try find network drivers from the vendors itself but I tried and was not successful a month back.Maybe newer drivers will come out from hardware vendors later .

Hi, as an FYI our recently ordered Dell R740's came with BCM57416 NetXtreme-E 10GBase-T RDMA onboard NICs.  I did a fresh install of XenServer 7.5 on these servers and they work perfectly. I believe the "included NICs" (2x 10Gbps, 2x 1Gbps) on these servers are replaceable so Dell may be able to assist? Let me know if you need any output from our R740s to assist getting this sorted.

I performed the test by disabling TCP OFFLOADING [https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX212540] and then we had again errors ... below.

Is not there a way for Citrix to provide a more "stable" driver for this chipset?


Searching the forum, there are dozens of cases with problem with the bnx2 and bnx2x driver.

Looks like it is still not working even though the module mentions it on Xenserver 7.5 .

Hi @Jeferson André,

 

Unfortunately as the BCM57800 is not listed on the HCL we only offer "best effort" support and cannot guarantee a fix.

 

Did this adapter come pre-installed in the R740? Doing some googling I can't find mention other examples of this confiiguration.

 

Looks like the firmware you are using came out around ~Dec 2017. I think this is more recent that our bnx2x driver so it may be a compatability issues. I will see if I can get hold of any newer driver source.

NIC 2 and 3 are connected, but 1 and 2 is showing link status = disconnected. If i enter in server bios setup, link becomes active.

I checked the cables and even changed the cables with the ports that works.
