7.13 ghost sessions with 4 processes

Jaakko Backlund

Question

Hello,

We are having issues with our Xenapp enviroment with following symptoms:

Server is showing users without username on task manager with 4 running processes:

csrss.exe

dwm.exe

LogonUI.exe

winlogon.exe

Users are not able to connect on the server running with this issue. Server is not rebooting unless reseted from Hyper-V's management when the issue has happened. Services can be killed, but the user who had the issue is not able to login until server is rebooted. Restarting profile management won't help on the issue.

About the infrastructure, there are 2 storefronts & 4 appservers splitted to two DG's.

Windows Server 2012 R2 on all servers, running on Hyper-V. The issue happens on all 4 appservers. User profiles are roamed in xenapp enviroment.

Platform was installed as 7.5 if i remember right, and has been upgraded from 7.5 -> 7.7 -> 7.13

UPM is running ver 5.7

The issue started before upgrading to 7.13.

What has been done or checked already:

-LogoffCheckSysModules reg has been configured with following executables:

AppSwitcher.exe,acrotray.exe,splwow64.exe,wisptis.exe,LyncMonitor2013.exe,SelfServicePlugin.exe,AuthManSvr.exe,concentr.exe,wfcrun32.exe,taskhost.exe,vmtoolsd.exe,AppVShNotify.exe,AppVStreamingUX.exe,SelfService.exe,CtxPvD.exe

-UPM upgraded

-Office 2016 installed, no windows search running ( There was some issues with 2013 & Windows Search )

-AV softwares removed

Any other ideas what to try ? The issue has been for several months, and only way that the product is even remotely useable is if the servers are scheduled to reboot daily.

Although I don't have an answer to your issue, I've seen an environment where restarting the Printer Spooler service (and Citrix Print Manager) would flush all the ghost sessions immediately. I think it's related to a certain type of printer driver but haven't had the time to pinpoint it.

It might help you pinpoint the issue.

In XenApp 7.15.5000 is the same problem, sometimes we have ghost sessions. I made a Citrix Support Case with version 7.15.1000 so i had to update to 7.15.5000 (including Windows Updates). But this didnt solve my problem. Restarting the Spooler is closing the sessions, but the local roaming profile of the user is locked. So User can not login in this server.

I am also having the same issue. I am posting in this article in case there are updates.

Ours is very sporadic. I get that its because of DNS, but the site is still allowing connections to these servers.  Is there a way to set a policy, or something, to say of name = '-' put in maint mode ?
