Issue Moving Virtual Disk "The VDI copy action has failed"

Josh Skyner

Question

i am having an issue moving one specific virtual disk from one SR to another, i have managed to move two other virtual disks attached to the same virtual machine fine. The error i get when i try and move this specific virtual disk. is: "The VDI copy action has failed" it fails after running for over 3 hours so does seem to be doing some sort of copy.

I have tried moving the disk by going into storage, right clicking the disk and move and also tried using the migration wizard.

does anyone know of a workaround or fix for this.

Thanks in advance

Josh,

Welcome first off to the forum!

You have to take into account that you need at least double the space used on both the originating SR as well as the target SR. Another option would be to attach that VDI to some random VM, export and import the VM and then detach and reattach the VDI to the VM you really want it associated with. Alternatively, you probably need to free up more space on one or the other or both SRs. How big is this VDI, BTW?

Thanks Tobias,

The VDI is 1000GB the size of the originating SR is 1910GB used of 26180GB and the destination SR is 4240GB of 26700GB

Sorry i have only been working with Xenserver for a couple of months, would i need to detach the VDI from the existing VM before attaching it to a random VM, then would i then just do a move as usual to the destination SR? once its moved then attach it to the original VM?

Thanks,

Josh

HI, if the issue is the space can't xen make a small validation before moving the vdi? And "The VDI copy action has failed" is not helpful, It should say there is no space.

Other issue is if the vm is down why does xen needs double the space?

Thanks Tobias.
