Citrix WEM (norskale) Waiting for "Desktop"

Jean-Charles OLLAT

Question

Hi all,

We just deploy WEM on our XenApp infrastructure. At each logon the WEM Agent 4.1 wait 5 minutes before starting in a published desktop XenAPP 7.6 (Windows 2012R2). In the norskale log it indicate that is "waiting for desktop" After 5 minutes we can use the published desktop.

Norskale Log :
09:41:33 Event -> VuemAgentConfigurationHelper.RetrieveVuemFiltersConditions() : Filter Condition Found -> Always True (Id:1)
09:41:33 Event -> MainController.WaitForDesktopIfRequired() : Waiting for Desktop...
09:47:00 Event -> MainController.ProcessInitialEnvironmentCleanup() : Initial Environment CleanUp -> Disabled

Hi Guys.

I'm using 4.2 version and the logon freezes for 5 minutes when I use UI Agent style.

After 5 minutes everything works well.

If I change to CMD Agent style, the session doesn't freeze, but the command prompt takes 5 minutes to close with the message "Processing filters conditions..."

I've already tested versions 4.1 and 4.2, all of them with the same behavior.

How can I solve this problem?

Regards.

Ederson

Hello Marco,

Thanks for your answer.

I enabled debug option, but no errors were logged.

I checked the files on profile: %userprofile%\Citrix WEM Agent Init.log, %userprofile%\Citrix WEM Agent.log

On application program: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Norskale\Norskale Agent Host\Citrix WEM Agent Host Service Debug.log

While the session is freezing, the log show the message "Wating for Desktop" as you can see below.

12:52:17 Event -> VuemAgentConfigurationHelper.RetrieveVuemFiltersRules() : Retrieving Filters Rules...
12:52:17 Event -> VuemAgentConfigurationHelper.RetrieveVuemFiltersRules() : Filter Rule Found -> Always True (Id:1)
12:52:17 Event -> MainController.RetrieveFilterConditions() : Starting Filters Conditions Retrieval...
12:52:17 Event -> VuemAgentConfigurationHelper.RetrieveVuemFiltersConditions() : Retrieving Filters Conditions...
12:52:17 Event -> VuemAgentConfigurationHelper.RetrieveVuemFiltersConditions() : Filter Condition Found -> Always True (Id:1)
12:52:17 Event -> MainController.WaitForDesktopIfRequired() : Waiting for Desktop...
12:57:43 Event -> MainController.ProcessInitialEnvironmentCleanup() : Initial Environment CleanUp  -> Disabled
12:57:43 Event -> MainController.ProcessEnvironmentalSettings() : Environmental Settings Processing -> Disabled
12:57:43 Event -> MainController.ProcessEnvironmentVariables() : Environment Variables Processing -> Disabled

I've tried a new install, new infraestructure server, new database, but the problem persist.

On this new installation I enabled only the option to launch the agent "Launch Agent at Logon", with no other configuration at all, and the error persist.

Thanks for you attention.

Still Writing about 5 minutes "Waiting for Desktop" problems...

After a long test batteries I found out that the problem only happens on Windows Server 2012.

When I deployed a new target device with Windows Server 2012 R2 in the same infrastructure, with the same applications installed, connected to the same Worspace Infrastruture and same policies applied, the agent works as promissed.

Maybe Citrix should review the solution for servers with version 2012, not 2012 R2, or remove this windows version from Agent Operating system prerequisites.

Ederson

Hi,

A private hotfix is available for Windows 2012 and Windows 8.0 for testing.

Hi Pierre

We encounter the same issue as Ederson Crippa.

08:01:58 Event -> MainController.WaitForDesktopIfRequired() : Waiting for Desktop...
08:07:24 Event -> MainController.ProcessInitialEnvironmentCleanup() : Initial Environment CleanUp  -> Disabled

We use Windows Server 2012 as well. Agent Version: 4.03.00.00.

Is it possible you sent me this Private Fix for testing?

Thanks

Daniel

I opened a Citrix case. The provided Private Hotfix (Replace Norskale.Vuem.Agent.Libraries.dll 25.05.2017 18:35 with a version from 21.06.2017 17:03) did not change anything.

But in the meantime the issue is gone. I'm not really sure, what happened. Maybe someone of our tech staff cleaned the VDA installation. (This solved other problems as well.) Means: Uninstall VDA, use VDACleanupUtility, Install VDA again. (You may have to reboot a lot.)

The cleaning was necessary because the VDA upgrade was not clean. The upgrade went fine and oficially successful. But apparently something went wrong. So only a cleanup helped.

Hi All,

Same issue since upgrading Windows 2016 VDA from 7.15 LTSR CU5 with WEM 4.07 to 1912 LTSR and WEM 1912.

Hangs on logon for about 10 to 60 seconds on Waiting for Desktop.

Thanks for the help

Regards,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

in my case it turns out that WEM wasn't the problem - for a test i disabled WEM and instead of "Waiting for Desktop" from WEM my Users are having a blackscreen for the same time. So Waiting for Desktop could also be a Problem with the Server / Image / Windows Patches itself. Try disabling WEM Agent and Relogon.

Hi Julian,

You're right.

I tested uninstalling VDA 1912 and installing the VDA 7.15 LTSR CU5 again (with keeping WEM 1912), and the issue is not present.

Seems to be an Citrix Profile Management 1912 issue because this black screen is not present when Citrix Profile Management is disabled on a VDA 1912.

Regards,

Jonathan

We are having the same issue in our environment, WEM hangs at Waiting for Desktop for exactly 10 to 60 seconds. We're running 7.15 CU5, and it happens with both WEM 1811 and 1906 for us.

Did you ever come up with a final solution or know the root cause? We're opening a ticket with Citrix.

4:50:17 PM Event -> MainController.RetrieveFilterConditions() : Starting Filters Conditions Retrieval...
4:50:17 PM Event -> MainController.WaitForDesktopIfRequired() : Waiting for Desktop...
4:51:18 PM Event -> MainController.ProcessInitialEnvironmentCleanup() : Initial Environment CleanUp  -> Disabled

Are you using UPM Profiles? WEM isn‘t the problem. If you disable the WEM service you will see that during the „waiting for desktop“ time a blackscreen occurs. If you disable UPM the blackscreen is gone, so it seems to be an issue with UPM.
