Xenapp 7.9: Wait for local session manager

I can verify that the registry keys Jeff Whitehead mentioned works. I am running W2K8R2 with XA 7.11. No need to restart the server, just restart the Citrix Group Policy Engine after adding the reg keys.

Also verified that 7.12 fixes the issue without having to use any reg keys.

Hello,

I have a Xenapp 7.9 environment on Windows 2012 R2. When logging in through Citrix I got message "Wait for local session manager" for 20-30 seconds. When logging in to the server with RDS, I do not have to wait for this.

I saw a lot of solutions for this problem, which I tested, but till now no solution. I tried the following solutions:

  • File C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\ntuserclass.dat does not exist
  • Remove Users permissions from the TSTheme.exe file. But also local administrators have delay.
  • Removed AntiVirus products
  • Removed Local and LocalLow from the Default profile on C:\users

Are there any other possible solutions I can try?

Maybe it is good to know both servers had installed full RDS-roles before, which I removed before installing Citrix Xenapp VDA.

Hi Arno,

I have the same problem on Windows Server 2008 R2. When I uninstall the Citrix HDX TS (retail) component and install a older version, then it works.

You can find the uninstall command under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall"

Citrix please provide a fix.

Best regards

I'm not seeing this behavior with XenApp 7.9 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Usually the issue you described means that something is hanging in the login process. Recommend following CTX101705 to see if it yields any clues:

http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX101705

To find out exactly where things are slowing down you might want to try a demo of ControlUp and at least you will know where to look once you've gathered the details.

Hello guys, this can be also caused by high amount of groups of AD users. Can be fixed by increasing MaxTokenSize parameter in registry.

For example -

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\Kerberos\Parameters]
"MaxTokenSize"=dword:0000bb80

Hello,

First tried option of Ronny Lier, but this gave me an unstable situation.

Regkey option from Alexey doesn't change anything for me.

Problem seems to be solved by uninstalling VDA 7.9 and install VDA 7.8.

Just did this on one of the servers. I need to change the others.

Hi,

my message was not a solution rather a failure analysis, that the problem came from the VDA 7.9 component "ICA HDX TS (retail)". The VDA 7.9 under Windows 7 are working.

This is my ControlUp result...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

User name:     XXX
Logon Time:     12:15:29
Logon Duration:     69,6 seconds

Logon Phase          Duration (s) Start Time End Time   Interim Delay
-----------          ------------ ---------- --------   -------------
Network Providers    1,1          12:15:29.6 12:15:30.7 0,0
Citrix Profile Mgmt  1,2          12:15:31.0 12:15:32.1 0,3
User Profile         0,1          12:15:32.1 12:15:32.3 0,0
Group Policy         4,3          12:15:32.3 12:15:36.6 0,0
GP Scripts (async)   0,1          12:16:37.2 12:16:37.4 60,6
Pre-Shell (Userinit) 1,0          12:16:37.2 12:16:38.2 -0,1
Shell                1,0          12:16:38.2 12:16:39.2 0,0

Only synchronous scripts affect logon duration

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The interim delay of GP scripts shows 60,6 seconds.

Increase the MaxTokenSize doesn´t help.

Best regards

I worked with Citrix support on this issue today (Case #71814447). In our case the issue is being caused by the "Citrix Group Policy Engine" service that is installed with VDA version 7.9. You can test if it's the same for your environment by setting the Citrix Group Policy Engine service to disabled and launching an app or desktop. When we did that the app or desktop launched as you would expect.

The issue does not occur when logging on through RDP, even with the Citrix Group Policy Engine service enabled.

Everything works fine if you use VDA version 7.8.

Just for reference our setup is:

Windows 2012 R2 with VDA 7.9 (currently 7.8 as a workaround)

Windows 2012 R2 Delivery Controllers

Hi Jeff,

thanks for the info.

I can confirm your statement. When I disable the Citrix Group Policy Engine Service then it works.

Please let me know when it gives a solution.

Best regards

Here is what I got back from Citrix. I haven't had a chance to test it out because my customer decided to stick with the workaround until Citrix creates a hotfix.

"Add the following 2 registry keys to your 7.9 VDA server - then try connecting to it using ICA to see if the issue still occurs:

Add reg keys in "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Citrix\GroupPolicy"

Dword: "CacheGpoExpireInHours" - Value = 5-24 (# of Hours) ***start with value of 5***

                Dword: "GpoCacheEnabled" - Value = 1

Restart the machine after adding these registry keys and attempt an ICA connection (at least twice) to see if that helps the Login delay."

Let me know if this resolves the issue for anyone.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

thanks for the update.

The registry keys solve the problem. Do you know whether Citrix plans a hotfix?

Best regards

Hello,

Same happen here for first launch application eventually I did testing with citrix support today.

1) Open RDP desktop on RDS Session host - no local session manager delay

2) Open RDP remote app with specific application path "c:\system32\calc.exe - no local session manager delay

3) Open Citrix publish desktop - no local session manager delay

4) Open Citrix publish app "calculator" - yes. there is local session manager waiting delay!!

For the case, add the registry key from Jeff post, do not solved after profile session purge from XenApp server.

I try stop Citrix group policy engine service, no delay anymore at local session manager.

Capture log send to Citrix this evening, waiting their reply soon..

Has there been an official update released by Citrix for the 7.9 VDA? Asides of course of upgrading your entire environment to 7.11... ?

After implementing the reg entries mentioned in your blog Alex in addition to your post Kin, it helped tremendously.
