Hey Folks,

My name is Krishnan Raghupathi, and I'm part of the Skype for Business product team at Microsoft - so I thought I'd weigh in on this topic. Support for the HDX Optimization Pack 2.1 on Sfb 2016 is part of an upcoming update. We expect that this update will roll out for Click-to-Run customers in September 2016.

Hi Stefan,

After installing Office 2016 (which includes the Skype for Business 2016 client) you must downgrade the Skype for Business client to Skype for Business 2015, and then apply the latest PU.

Good question! I haven't been able to find any clear documentation from Microsoft on this yet... One of our SEs, Dave Fiske, recommends the following steps:

To deliver the Skype for Business 2015 client from XenApp/XenDesktop, follow this “recipe” to install a version that is compatible.  You MUST follow this exact order of installation:

  1. First, install Lync 2013 into the virtual host or base image.  Both the x64 and the x86 versions will work.
  2. Install Microsoft KB2863908 into the virtual host or base image.  Choose the appropriate version (x64 or x86) based on the version chosen in step 1.
  3. If you chose to install an x64 version in step 1, Install Microsoft KB2889853 into the virtual host.
  4. If you chose to install an x86 version in step 1, install Microsoft KB3039700 into the virtual host.
  5. Install Microsoft KB2817430 into the virtual host or base image.  Choose the appropriate version (x64 or x86) based on the version chosen in step 1.
  6. Install Microsoft KB3039700 into the virtual host or base image.  Choose the appropriate version (x64 or x86) based on the version chosen in step 1.
  7. Install Microsoft KB3054791 into the virtual host or base image.  Choose the appropriate version (x64 or x86) based on the version chosen in step 1.
  8. Install Microsoft KB3114351 into the virtual host or base image.  Choose the appropriate version (x64 or x86) based on the version chosen in step 1.
  9. Install Microsoft KB3115033 into the virtual host or base image.  Choose the appropriate version (x64 or x86) based on the version chosen in step 1.

Hi can someone tell me if the RTOP 2.0 can be used as a substitute for Microsoft Lync 2013 VDI Plugin ?

Hi Lars,

Yes, you can think of the HDX RealTime Media Engine (RTME) in RTOP 2.0/2.1 as a replacement for the old v1 VDI Plug-in. In addition to offering a much-reduced footprint, it also supports Linux and Mac endpoints. Citrix and Microsoft co-developed the new v2 architecture to bring together the best of the two v1 solutions (VDI Plug-in and HDX RTOP 1.8) and improve the architecture (e.g. single point of authentication, single point of SIP signaling). This is now the only solution endorsed by Microsoft for delivering Skype for Business in a virtualized environment. You can read more about it in my original blog post announcing the 2.0 release and in the recording of the SYN107 session at Citrix Synergy. RTOP 2.x can be used with Lync Server 2013. The Skype for Business 2015 client must be updated to the latest PU. An update to the Skype for Business 2016 client for interop with RTOP 2.1 (which will be released in June) is "coming soon".

Hi David,

RTOP 2.1 will be released at the end of June.

The Skype for Business 2015 client update for RTOP 2.1 is already out (June 7th PU) and the Skype for Business 2016 client update for RTOP 2.1 is "coming soon".

Hi Derek

Should the 2016 S4B client already work? There were some MS updates, but...

Thanks

Udo

I did some testing for S4B 2015 and you can use ODT to create an AppV package of 'Lync' which downloads the latest version of S4B for you.  The AppV S4B 2015 works just fine with HDX RTC.

The ODT essentially boils down the install to two commands:

Setup.exe /download D:\config.xml

Setup.exe /packager D:\config.xml D:\Office_2013\S4B_AppV

Ba-da-boom.

Any updates on availability of the September update? I did see the following update released but it makes no mention of Citrix HDX Optimization Pack compatibility: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3118288

Has someone tested SfB 2016 with KB3118288 and HDX Optimization Pack 2.1 or 2.1.1?

Yes, SfB 2016 with KB3118288 and HDX Optimization Pack 2.1 installed, but not working. The Pairing Status Indicator is not displayed.

Hi all,

To reiterate the comment that Microsoft Program Manager Krishnan Raghupathi posted elsewhere on this forum, an update to the Skype for Business 2016 client to support the v2 HDX RealTime Optimization Pack will be released this month (September 2016) as part of an Office 2016 update for Click-to-Run customers. I'll post an announcement here when I see it. Let's keep our eyes open next week. This update will work with RTOP 2.1 and above (i.e. including this week's 2.1.100 maintenance release). We tested with a pre-release from Microsoft which is why we were able to declare RTOP 2.1 to be "Skype for Business 2016 Ready".

If you need this for MSI, please contact Microsoft directly for their timeline (under NDA).

Derek
