How many users I can have on 10 Mbps NetScaler VPX

Adam Kamali | Aficionado | 174 | Members | 435 posts

Hello Everyone;

I'm in the process of writing upgrade a proposal for a client to upgrade the existing Secure Gateway server to NetScaler VPX appliance. We have about 200 users connects to VDI from different places from all over the world.

can someone confirm if my calculations are correct?

From what I know, Normal usage on ICA connection per user is 100 kbps*, so 10Mbps = 10240 kbps = 100 users. if they are all connecting at the same time.

* We are talking about a user that use MS office products and other (non graphics intensive applications).

your thoughts are welcomed.

Thanks

Thanks guys but the post did not answer my questions. I'm looking for actual math work rather then experiences.

the picture in the post is for VPN connections and not ICA.

Thanks

Your calculation approach will be correct provided your bandwidth estimate for ICA is.

I don't think there is a hard and fast rule for ICA bandith measurement applicable to applications and will be dependent on the application profile as already indicated. Safe bet will be to take specific bandwidth measurement for your 'heaviest' application and use this as a baseline for your calculations.

Also worth nothing that the pay-as-you-grow NetScaler licensing allows a license-only upgrade from VPX10 to VPX 200 through to VPX3000 should the initial VPX10 bandwidth becomes insufficient for your requirements.

Hi All,

Apologies for hijacking an old thread.

One of our customers is planning to extend their existing XenApp 6.5 environment and would like implement Netscaler VPX so that the users can access the applications from internet securely and using two factor authentication.

(1) The no.of users would be ~ 270. Is there any hard-coded restriction with the number of users who can connect to Netscaler VPX? I have gone trough lot of documents and links and found that the count is limited to 300 or 500- Is this the case or am I missing something here?

(2) Also for a ~ 270 user environment what kind and number of licenses related to Netscaler should we purchase? (I am completely new to Netscaler and I could not seriously understand the licensing side of it even after going through a lot of document).

(3) We have two StoreFront servers v2.5. Can I spin up another StoreFront v2.6 server and a Netscaler VPX (trial) and do a POC without disturbing the exiting StoreFront setup (user connectivity)?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Rahul U S

(1) The concurrent session limit on a VPX is a matter of CPU/memory bottleneck. With default CPU/memory settings on Netscaler VPX you can host approximately 700 concurrent users. By adding extra CPU/memory you can get even more.

(2) Depends on the average bandwidth usage of your users. If you wish to offer them webcam/HDX/hi-def videos etc then you are looking at higher values. Regular Office Suite user uses between 100-300 kb/s from my experience. If we assume 250 kb/s then a 50 Mbps VPX license should serve 200 concurrent users. This does not take spikes into behaviour (200 users concurrently watching Hi-Def video).

(3) Yes, it will not affect your production. You will need an additional external FQDN that is NATed to your VPN vServer (Gateway) on your Netscaler VPX, etcetera.

Thanks a lot, Rasmus! That was very crisp and clear.

So, I think I should propose Netscaler VPX 200 as we are expecting ~ 270 users which may increase to ~600 in the future as well. I understood that the we will have to buy "one" Netscaler VPX 200 license for the each Netscaler VPX 200 device (So we will need to buy "two" if we plan for HA, right?) . Can we purchase licenses like 50 Mbps/150Mbps VPX licenses- I guess you were just giving an example?

I believe, Standard and Enterprise editions supports only 5 CCU VPN users and we should also purchase additional CCU licenses to accommodate 270 users. I am aware that Platinum XA/XD customers get entitlement for CCU license for the same number of XA/XD users they purchased the license for.

Sorry to trouble you all again. This came in a short notice and I have to collect as much information as possible by this Monday.

Hi Sam,

Thanks! I had seen that post, but just wanted to know if there is any hard-coded limitations. All the VPX appliances seems to support upto 1500 concurrent users at the max.

Thanks,

Rahul U S

So we will need to buy "two" if we plan for HA, right?

Yep. Since it's Active/Passive, you do not need to buy 2x the CCU licenses - you simply allocate them (by netscaler hostname) one at a time to each Netscaler through Citrix licensing portal. This is not a breach of license agreement since only one Netscaler will always be active.

Can we purchase licenses like 50 Mbps/150Mbps VPX licenses- I guess you were just giving an example?

I know 10 and 200 are available from everywhere, but it might be that 50 is only available from certain Citrix license resellers.

I believe, Standard and Enterprise editions supports only 5 CCU VPN users and we should also purchase additional CCU licenses to accommodate 270 users.

Only if you plan on offering SmartAccess or full SSL VPN. If you simply wish to offer them ICA Desktop/applications then you do not need any universal (CCU) licenses.

I am aware that Platinum XA/XD customers get entitlement for CCU license for the same number of XA/XD users they purchased the license for.

Correct.
