Unable to install Citrix Receiver on Windows 10

Paul Hobbs1709157985

Question

Hi there,

I am trying to install Citrix Receiver 4.1 on Windows 10 machine.  I previously had 4.6 installed, and I uninstalled that version.  Now when I try to install version 4.1, I get the following error message:

A later version of Citrix Receiver Inside is already present.

I have searched high and low for ways to fix this issue.  I have followed detailed instructions on removing anything related to Citrix from AppData, ProgramData, ProgramFiles folders etc, I have deleted registry keys, I have even run the Receiver CleanUp Utility.  Nothing has fixed the problem.

I tried using Process Monitor to see if I could figure out what registry key or file was causing the installation to fail, but I couldn't find anything (although, I admit I have not used Process Monitor before so I may have used it incorrectly).

What am I missing here?

Thanks in advance.

Which registry keys did you remove? Did you specifically remove Citrix entries from:

HKLM/software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall

HKLM/Software/wow6432node/microsoft/windows/currentversion/uninstall

HKLM/Software/Classes/Installer/Products

Also, the later version of CitrixReceiver.exe have a /RCU flag that is suppose to cleanup old versions.

Hi Alan,

I removed quite a few registry keys (including the ones you have listed).  Basically I followed the directions on this page:

Cheers,

download the sysinternals suite so you can track which registry key still exists thats getting in the way. I hate installers that aren't smart enough to see and/or figure out previous versions. I'm fighting an AV product that didn't completely uninstall and its a pain.

Hi Alan,

I assume you mean using Process Monitor and filter on anything where the process name is TrolleyExpress.exe and where the operation is anything to do with the registry.  I did that, and for the life of me I can't find anything which looks like a key or value that might refer to a later version.  Is there some clever way of using Process Monitor (or some other tool) so that it will tell me what registry key was the trigger for the error message in the TrolleyExpress log file?

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,

if you already checked Registry keys and cleaned up the program folders, please also check Default user profile on computer

inclusive hidden folders. Maybe there are some resty things.

Cheers

Hi Meik,

I have checked the files and folders for the default user profile as well.  I made sure that hidden files and folders, as well as protected operating system files were all visible.

Cheers,

Paul

the only thing you could do is try and line up times in trolly log with process monitor, not an easy task and sounds like you have already tried that. Have you tried to install an old version then run the cleanup utility ? I would be pulling my hair out if I were you about now.

Thx for the tips Alan.  And yes, I kind of am pulling my hair out at this point.  Is it worth logging a support ticket with Citrix?  Is this something they would typically help out with?

Cheers,

Paul
