XenDesktop CitrixDesktopLock

Nik Stapley

Question

Hi

Citrix Desktop Lock is a great tool for repurposing old tin, unfortunately it only allows for the launching of one desktop. We have users who need access to multiple desktops, Citrix - pls can you update the software to enable the ability to provide the user with a list of published desktop from which they can select which one to launch?

We need to use CitrixDesktopLock as we also need the pass through of CTRL+ALT+DEL which is provides.

I'm sure the community would love such an update.

Regards

Nik

To enable users to choose between multiple desktops

By default, when a user logs on to a Desktop Appliance site, the first desktop (in alphabetical order) available to the user in the store for which the site is configured starts automatically. If you provide users with access to multiple desktops in a store, you can configure the Desktop Appliance site to display the available desktops so users can choose which one to access. To change these settings, you edit the site configuration file.

  1. Use a text editor to open the web.config file for the Desktop Appliance site, which is typically located in the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Citrix\storenameDesktopAppliance directory, where storename is the name specified for the store when it was created.
  2. Locate the following element in the file.

I have the same problem and the reply is not relevant to what is going on. The issue is "Citrix Desktop Lock" chooses a VDI seemingly at random, I have done some pretty deep research into this and it isn't in alphabetical order, has nothing to do with farm name (we have 2), nothing to do with icon name, there is seemingly no visible rhyme or reason though I'm sure there is one behind the scenes.

The Desktop Appliance Site is for non-domain joined systems or systems not present in the domain of the storefront servers, in this instance, we are using Web Interface so not only are my systems domain joined, but we aren't using Storefront so this is doubly irrelevant.

Citrix Desktop Lock also has a host of other issues, if you aren't using session reliability and there is even the slightest network outage people get dropped to a blank screen with no buttons, no messages, no reconnect, nothing. They have to ctrl+alt+del to log off and then log back in to get back to their XD machine.

In my experience, Desktop Lock is only good if:

#1 you are using Session Reliability

#2 you only ever assign people 1 VM

While I feel this does cover most use cases, some simple changes to Desktop Lock would permit it's smooth functionality in other situations. A reconnect button would work wonders, and in the instance of multiple desktops, just display the desktops and let people click the button. None of this has to be amazing, just not a blank screen and not a "I choose for you" desktop assignment system.

The issue with using another company for this product is two fold, first, Desktop Lock almost does the job, it's right there, we can see the finish line, Citrix just needs to casually stroll over it and they will have won the game. At the same time Desktop Lock is so close that paying for another solution just to get a button and desktop selection is a jagged pill to swallow. So we are more or less stuck with that is available right now. If someone has multiple desktops, we uninstall desktop lock and have IE launch automatically to the web interface on login, even when all they have is a thin client. That's all we could do.

  2. Locate the following element in the file.
    <resources showMultiDesktop="false" />
  3. Change the value of the showMultiDesktop attribute to true to enable users to see and select from all the desktops available to them in the store when they log on to the Desktop Appliance site.

Small update on this, the new Desktop Lock with Receiver 4.3 actually has a restart and logoff button, but still does not allow desktop selection in the case of multiple assignments. We haven't actually moved to a point of implementing it yet however we are in the process of lining everything up, I will post again when I have some more experience with the product.
