Direct Connections (ICA File, Shortcut) to a Site (Farm)

Milan Janezic

Question

We're upgrading from XenApp 6.5 to 7.5.

Our new 7.5 Environment looks as follows:
- 2x Delivery Controller (Delivery Controller, StoreFront, license Server etc..)
- 5x VDA Servers with the published Applications

Clients:
- Published Desktops / Notebooks with Win7 (maintained and supported by our mother company)
- Internet Explorer 9.0
- Citrix Receiver 3.4

Our possibilities are very limited, since we can't install/configure on the Clients any Software (maintained by our mother company)
The WebStoreFront doesn't work with IE 9 / Citrix Receiver 3.4 -> Can't start the Application.
I've tested with Portable Firefox and it's working but that's not a solution -> Our Company is using IE 9.

In XenApp 6.5 we're using ICA files to Connect to the published Application in the Farm.
Is there a possibility to connect with an ICA File or Shortcut to the Site (Farm) in 7.5?
Direct Connections to a single Server are working, but we want connect to the Server Site!

Custom ICA files were removed in XenDesktop 7.x.- http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/xendesktop-71/cds-overview-features-not-in-this-release.html

It should be possible to launch icons from Storefront Receiver for Web using Receiver 3.4. What's not working? HTML5 won't work with IE9 but regular Receiver should work. If not then we'll need to troubleshoot.

Do you have NetScaler Gateway? By default, Receiver tires to connect to the private internal IP address of the VDA machine. Do you need NAT to make that work?

You can enable logging in Receiver - http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX132883 . You can even see the ICA file generated by StoreFront - http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX115304

It's just an Error message if I click on the Icon (Citrix StoreWeb): -> App 'blabla' can't be started

Again, I can't install or configure anything on the Clients (don't have any administrator rights).

So enable logging isn't possible also to configure the Citrix Receiver isn't a option!

No, I don't have NetScaler Gateway. It's just an internal Network.

Thanks for your help :)

If the error appears in the StoreFront web page then that's a StoreFront/XenApp issue and not a Receiver issue. On the StoreFront server, look in Event Viewer > Applications and Services > Citrix Delivery Services. This could happen if you don't have any machines registered.

Did you enable HTML5 in your Receiver for Web? Are you forcing HTML5 instead of using it as failback?

Ok, I've found the problem with StoreFront Web. Somehow if I'm using the Domain pass-htrough Authentication Mode the Applications won't start. Following Warning is in the Event Viewer visible:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        Citrix Broker Service
Date:          28.04.2014 13:54:37
Event ID:      2100
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:
User:          NETWORK SERVICE
Computer:      apy-xen-dc1.corproot.net
Description:
The Citrix Broker Service failed to validate a user's credentials on an XML service.

Verify the trust relationships between your domains.

------------------------------------------------------------

But again isn't there any possiblity to make an Shortcut/Icon which would directly connect to the Application?

So right now I can only use the StoreFront Web to open the published Applications? (Which is really not what my employees want).
